The aspect of safety is something unique to the Causeway Bridge as compared to anywhere else in the world. The Causeway Police, Motor Assistance Patrol operators, and dispatchers are on duty around the clock.  If there is an incident on the bridge, they will respond within a record breaking 4 minutes. With 20,000 vehicles going south in the morning and 20,000 going back in the evening it is imperative that our responders arrive at the incidents immediately.   There is an average of 10-12 breakdowns each day. Many of these breakdowns are caused by flat tires, vehicles running out of gas, and mechanical issues.

The main safety message to motorists is to pay attention. If they drive the speed limit of 65 miles per hour, they will be across the bridge in 22 minutes. Focus on the road to be situationally aware. For example, if traffic is going a little under 65 then go a little under 65; stay with flow of the traffic.  Watch the spacing of your vehicle between other vehicles.  Don’t get too close to the vehicle ahead of you. Tailgating is one of the major causes of crashes on the bridge. If you tailgate, you may not have time to stop in enough time to avoid causing an accident.

Our Commuters

One of the best things about our commuters is that they look out for each other. They enhance safety on the bridge. The majority of them depend on the bridge to go to work, to school and to visit relatives and friends.  They are a force multiplied because in conjunction with our police and cameras, when they see an incident, they call dispatchers who immediately alert the Causeway Police.
