Morning commutes across the Lake Pontchartrain Causeway are typically orderly affairs — two lanes of vehicles driving the 24 miles over water.

But getting onto the bridge’s southbound span for the trip to the south shore can make drivers feel like they’re in the Frogger video game, as vehicles arriving at the toll plaza in Mandeville jockey for one of the two tag-only lanes. Hoping to improve the flow of traffic entering the southbound span on weekday mornings, the Causeway will open a third dedicated lane for the bridge’s nearly 75,000 toll tag holders starting Wednesday at 4 a.m. Lane 4 at the toll plaza will become a tag-only lane between 4 a.m. and 4 p.m. Monday through Friday.
